Perth school teacher Naomi Tekea Craig’s social media photos paint a picture of a perfectly ordinary family capturing life’s happiest milestones.
Just a few years later, the seemingly ideal family dynamic would be shattered when Mrs. Craig welcomed another child under very different circumstances.
In accusations that shocked Australia, the 33-year-old mother was accused of having sexual intercourse twice with a child over 13 and under 16.
He is also charged with possession of child abuse material and persistent sexual intercourse with a child under 16.
On Wednesday, police also announced they had laid three additional charges against him: sexual intercourse with a child over 13 and under 16, indecent relations with a child over 13 and under 16, and indecent intercourse with a child under 13, bringing the total number of alleged offenses to seven.
It comes after Western Australia revealed Ms Craig had recently given birth and DNA testing of a sample of her placenta was believed to have found an alleged link between the newborn and her alleged victim.
Police Commissioner Col Blanch said on Wednesday that DNA testing showed the alleged victim was the baby’s father.
He described the allegations as “disgusting” and said sexual crimes against children were made even more aggravating when the perpetrator was in power.
“The matter is before the courts, but more generally this is a very serious and heinous crime in relation to sexual offenses against children in our society,” he said.
“We should all be shocked by these allegations that young people are being preyed on in our society.
“I’m not going to talk about it specifically, but it’s even more aggravating if it’s done by someone who is in authority or under someone else’s supervision.”
Ms. Craig has been on maternity leave since December, according to a school bulletin.
It was stated that he was married when the allegations emerged, that he got married in the Yarra Valley in October 2019 and that he had a child with his wife.
Frederick Irwin Anglican School, which charges fees of up to $9,568 a year, sent a letter to parents and carers earlier this month confirming the alleged victim was no longer a student at the school.
The letter also stated that Ms Craig had been suspended from duty “pending the conclusion of the police investigation and any prosecution”.
“I regret to inform you that a teacher from our school has been arrested by the police and charged with child-related offenses that do not concern any current students,” the letter reads.
“The teacher was instructed not to go to school.
“The information the school has indicates there is no need to worry about other children at the school.”
West argues that the school’s actions do not mean the former teacher is guilty of the charges, just that those steps were taken.
Frederick Irwin Anglican School is a private, co-educational Anglican school in Meadow Springs with students from kindergarten through Grade 12.
The school also has a primary school campus in Halls Head.
Ms Craig is expected to appear in Mandurah Magistrates’ Court for an audio link hearing on January 27.
West has since confirmed Ms Craig’s first hearing was in Perth Magistrates’ Court on December 17; This was just one day after he was originally charged with four felonies.
His initial hearing was closed to the public, and the allegations were not made public until January.
