NASA, DoD Practice Abort Scenarios Ahead of Artemis II Moon Mission

NASA and the Ministry of Defense (DOD) came together on 11 and 12 June to simulate the emergency procedures they would use to save the Artemis II team in case of an emergency. Simulations on the shores of Florida and supported by launch and flight control teams prepare NASA to send NASA to send four astronauts for the month and next year as part of the agency’s first crew Artemis mission.

The team rehearsed the procedures they would use to save the crew during the cancellation of the Orion spacecraft of NASA during the launching ramp and departure of the Rocket of SLS (Space Launch System). During the tests, a number of test models and a representative version of Orion’s Creet Module Test article were used.

The launch team at NASA in Florida at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the agency’s mission control at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, and the task management team, all worked together using integrated procedures for these emergency scenarios.

NASA’s Deputy Deputy Deputy Mars Program of MOON MARS, Lakiesha Hawkins said, “Part of preparing to send people to the moon, Artemis II.“ We are approaching our brave mission to send four astronauts around the Moon, and our integrated tests allow us to bring them home in any scenario. ”

The starting ramp cancellation scenario rose first. The teams made a normal launch countdown before declaring a cancellation before the rocket was planned. During an emergency, a real pad would push Orion’s launch cancellation system and a safe distance away and direct the parachutes of the capsule to jump before talking to a safe leap from the Florida coast.

For a simulated leap, the maniced test Orion on the ship was placed in the water to Kennedy five miles east. After the launch team called for cancellation of the Pad, two navy helicopters carrying the US Air Force Pararescuers left the nearby Patrick Space Force Base. The savior jumped into the water with unique DOD and NASA recovery equipment to carry the spacecraft safely, to take the model team and to carry it for medical care in helicopters such as in case of a real pad cancellation during the Artemis II mission.

The next day he focused on a cancellation scenario during the rise to space.

The Artemis Recovery team used the Orion Crew module test article and models 12 miles east of Kennedy. With the launch and flight control teams such as Artemis II crew in a simulator in Johnson, the rescue team took action after receiving the simulated rise cancellation call and the US Air Force and the US Air Force Pararesuers started the rescue procedures. After reaching the capsule, the savors jumped from C-17 with DOD and NASA unique rescue equipment. In a real cancellation of a real rise, Orion would leave the rocket in the genus of milliseconds to safely move away from parachute deployment and splashing.

Rescue procedures are similar to the procedures used in the hired rescue test on the California coast in March. This show ended with the opening of the cover and the removal of the models from the capsule, so that the teams stopped completing the helicopter transport to be used during a real rescue.

Applying procedures for extreme scenarios is part of the work of executing NASA’s mission and keeping the crew safe. Through the Artemis campaign, NASA will send astronauts scientific discovery, discovering the bear for economic benefits and send the basis of the first crew tasks to Mars – for the benefit of everyone.
