Russia’s massing of troops on NATO borders to prepare for a possible future conflict with the Western alliance increases fears about the outbreak of World War III.
Moscow is expanding military units along NATO’s eastern border and giving them combat experience in Ukraine, creating the backbone of a future fighting force, Lithuanian security services said in their annual threat assessment. The report notes that Vladimir Putin has already divided brigades into divisions, created new units and developed military infrastructure along NATO borders, including the heavily militarized Kaliningrad region between Western powers Poland and Lithuania. This comes as Russian sources this week highlighted that a British “spy plane” monitored the flashpoint Kaliningrad region twice in one day.
