On its first day of operation, Navi Mumbai Airport operated 48 flights connecting nine domestic cities and served more than 4,000 passengers.

Navi Mumbai Airport began commercial operations on Thursday, marking a major milestone for Mumbai’s aviation sector and India’s infrastructure growth. The official name of the new airport is Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). With its launch, Mumbai joins global cities such as London and New York that operate multiple airports to handle growing air traffic. It is one of India’s largest greenfield airport projects and was completed in record time.

First day of operations

The first commercial flight, IndiGo flight 6E460 from Bengaluru, landed at 8 am and was greeted with the traditional water cannon salute. On its first day of operation, the airport operated 48 flights connecting nine domestic cities and served more than 4,000 passengers. The fact that heavy traffic was seen in the early morning hours shows that demand was strong from the first day.

Who developed Navi Mumbai Airport?

The airport is expected to ease congestion at the ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’ and support the long-term travel needs of the region. It is developed and operated by Adani Airports Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited.

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani personally welcomed the first batch of passengers and said that this moment was a proud day for both Mumbai and the country. “Welcoming NMIA’s first passengers along with their Param Vir Chakra awards gave a glimpse of what India is currently taking shape,” said Gautam Adani. Adani Group Chairman said, “Standing with workers, farmers, social workers and our disabled colleagues captured the spirit of a nation moving forward with trust and compassion.”

Jeet Adani, Director, Adani Airports Holdings Limited, said the new airport will help create a strong and resilient multi-airport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, improving passenger experience and supporting future aviation growth.

“NMIA is building a flexible multi-airport system for MMR, increasing capacity, enhancing the passenger experience and future-proofing the region’s aviation growth,” said Jeet Adani.
On the eve of the launch, the airport hosted a massive drone demonstration featuring more than 1,500 synchronized drones.
