Bengals kicker McPherson hits 67-yard field goal but timeout nullifies it

Cincinnati Bengals kicker Evan McPherson nearly rewrote the NFL record books when he lined up for a 67-yard field goal to end the first half against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

McPherson’s shot hit the crossbar of the goalpost and went over the uprights. Unfortunately, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur called a timeout before the kick was taken and it did not count.

The longest field goal in NFL history is a 66-yarder by former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker. McPherson went all out and, with the help of the wind at his back, could finally get the Bengals on the board.

Instead McPherson had to try the kick again, and being several feet shorter, his kick didn’t have the same muscle. Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon had an opportunity to return the kick, but couldn’t get far as the half ended.

While Tucker owns the record for field goals in 2021, Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little kicked a 70-yard field goal, but that was in a preseason game. So this remains an unofficial record despite the incredible achievement.

At the time, the Bengals could certainly use those points as they were still struggling offensively despite having a new quarterback at linebacker.

Cincinnati made a surprising trade with the division rival Cleveland Browns to acquire veteran Joe Flacco, as Jake Browning has not had success since the Joe Burrow injury earlier in the season.

Head coach Zac Taylor hopes to take his offense even further under Flacco, but there was no sign of such production in the first half.

The Bengals couldn’t put anything on the board, while their defense held the Packers to just 10 points.
