New Jersey governor signs laws restricting state participation in immigration enforcement

March 25 (Reuters) – New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill signed three bills on Wednesday aimed at limiting state officials’ involvement in federal immigration enforcement.
The signings are New Jersey’s latest moves against the Trump administration’s immigration agenda. The state filed a lawsuit last week to close a proposed detention center.
The laws signed by Sherrill require law enforcement to “disclose facial identification during certain public interactions” and provide identification before arresting or detaining someone.

The move also limits the information local and state agencies and healthcare facilities can collect, including immigration status, according to a statement from the governor’s office.
“These bills underscore that in New Jersey we still follow the Constitution and uphold the rule of law,” Sherrill said in a statement. he said.
The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
