New measles case in Perth as Royal Perth and Fiona Stanley Hospital listed as exposure sites

Two of Western Australia’s busiest hospitals have been listed as measles exposure sites after a new case was confirmed in the metro region on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Health said the last case in Perth visited both Royal Perth and Fiona Stanley hospitals last week.

A public health alert highlighted RPH ward 4B as an exposure area on three separate occasions.

Health officials also confirmed the case was unrelated to the Pilbara cluster, leading to the opening of measles testing centers in many hospitals in the region.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads primarily through airborne droplets. The virus can remain in a room for up to 30 minutes after an infectious person leaves the room.

Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, runny nose, sore eyes, and cough; This is followed three or four days later by a red splotchy rash that begins on the face before spreading to the rest of the body.

People are usually contagious from one day before the onset of symptoms to four days after the rash appears.

This brings WA’s total measles caseload to 51, making the State responsible for more than one in three measles cases nationwide for the year.

Health officials continue to urge people to check their vaccination records to see if they have been fully vaccinated with two doses of the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine. People born before 1965 are considered immune to measles.
