New syllabus features major backflips

“We listened to all the complaints and issues and held targeted consultations for 12 months. We made some significant changes to make sure performance was valued, the content we needed was still there,” he said.

The first draft doubled the exam time for students studying Music 1 and took action to reduce the weight of practical performances on a student’s final grade. According to the final syllabus, the written exam will last 70 minutes and will continue to be worth 40 percent of the final grade.

Drama NSW chief executive Kelly Young said the curriculum was a “decent improvement”. According to the changes, the drama theory exam will consist of three extended response questions instead of two.

In the current exam, students had four texts to analyze and two essays to write. Now students only need to analyze two texts in an essay, answer two short responses, and answer a fourth question about their ensemble performance.

The drama exam will last 90 minutes.
