New Year’s Day supermarket opening hours for Aldi, Tesco, Asda, M&S and more

The year has finally come to an end with people across the country celebrating and looking forward to what 2026 will bring for them. To help you get off to a good start, supermarkets have revealed whether they will be open or closed on New Year’s Day.

For those who want to go to the shops to fill their fridge after a happy New Year’s Eve, most supermarkets will be open to help you. Supermarkets have also confirmed their opening hours in Scotland on Friday 2 January. Find all the information you need about your local supermarket below.

A spokesperson for Aldi confirmed its stores will be closed on New Year’s Day. Customers are advised to check local store hours online to see if any changes have occurred.

asda

Asda has confirmed that its stores will be open from 9am to 6pm on New Year’s Day. On New Year’s Eve, working hours will be extended from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tesco

England, Wales, Northern Ireland Extra shops and supermarkets will open from 9am on New Year’s Day and close by 6pm. Scotland Extra stores and Superstores will be open from 11am to 6pm. Express stores in Scotland will be open from 11am to 6pm.

Most Express stores will open from 8am to 10pm, although some larger Express stores may have shorter opening hours.

On New Year’s Eve, Tesco Extra stores and Superstores will close at 7pm in the Isle of Man, with some changes. The majority of Express stores will close at 22:00, and some large Express stores will close at 19:00.

Scottish Extra stores and Superstores will be open from 8am to 7pm, and Scottish Express stores will be open from 8am to 8pm. All other stores will return to normal trading hours.

Morrisons

All Morrisons stores will be open from 9am to 6pm on New Year’s Day. On New Year’s Eve, stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Normal trading hours will resume in England and Wales on Friday, January 2. In Scotland, shops will be open from 9am to 6pm.

Lidl

A spokesperson for Lidl confirmed that all stores outside the M25 will be closed on New Year’s Day. Supermarkets have urged consumers to check their local store’s opening times on their branch finder or via the Lidl Plus app.

Sainsbury’s

On New Year’s Eve, Sainsbury’s supermarkets will be open from 8am to 8pm, and convenience stores will be open from 9am to 9pm. Gas stations will open 30 minutes before the main store and close 30 minutes after, except on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when they will open an hour later.

Scotland stores will be open from 8am to 8pm on Friday, January 2, and markets will operate normal hours.

Waiter

Waitrose has no set opening hours for New Year’s Day, although these will vary from store to store. Waitrose advised customers to check out individual stores using its branch finder.

M&S

Good Housekeeping UK reports that M&S ​​stores in England and Wales will be closed on New Year’s Day. Scotland stores will be open from 10am to 6pm.

All stores will be open from 8 am to 6 pm on New Year’s Eve.
