New York mayoral election results: Zohran Mamdani wins

Washington: New Yorkers elected Zohran Mamdani, a left-wing Muslim immigrant who promised to raise taxes on corporations and fund popular services for the top 1 percent, as their next mayor.

The 34-year-old state assemblyman will be New York’s second-youngest mayor, the first Muslim and only the second democratic socialist to lead the largest and most important city in the United States and the global center of capitalism.

The Associated Press announced the Mamdani race at 21:34 local time, less than an hour after the polls closed.

Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, defeated Democratic former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who was running as an independent after losing the party primary to Mamdani in June.

With 80 percent of the estimated votes counted, Mamdani leads with a simple majority of 50.6 percent to Cuomo’s 41.2 percent, the AP reported.

The expected victory, according to opinion polls, sets up a strong fight between Mamdani and US President Donald Trump, who has described the next mayor as a communist and “radical left lunatic” who will destroy New York.

Trump had instructed his followers to vote for Democrat Cuomo instead of Republican Curtis Sliwa, who is not a viable candidate and is polling below 10 percent.
