A New York Times opinion piece omitted many details in describing the fatal shooting of Minnesota woman Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer after claiming that Good was “summarily executed.”

“We have become a country where a person who protests paramilitary power can be summarily publicly executed.” New York Times columnist M. Gessen wrote on Sunday.

Gessen continued: “After an ICE agent shot Renee Good three times at point-blank range in Minneapolis on January 7, President Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and other federal officials said the attack was justified as an act of self-defense (video shows otherwise) and pointed to Good’s apparent affiliation with left-wing groups — seemingly confirming that protesting is now punishable by death in America.”

Gessen also referred to Good’s Jan. 7 death as an “execution” later in the article, while lamenting the limits of pushing back against the Trump administration.

“And the execution of Renee Good certainly affected the mental calculus of every potential protester,” Gessen wrote.

But Gessen’s article did not include any additional context about the shooting, such as Good driving a Honda Pilot SUV toward ICE officers after allegedly ignoring requests to exit the vehicle.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also reported that the ICE officer who shot Good suffered internal bleeding in his torso as a result of being hit by his vehicle, but the extent of the bleeding is not yet clear.

These details were not available in Gessen’s article.

Gessen instead praised Minnesota residents for “speaking, writing, posting, protesting, and voting” against the administration’s ICE operations and claimed they were preying on people.

“We have become a country where people disappear to a paramilitary force that hunts them in their homes, city streets, country lanes, and even the courts. Less than a year ago, videos of ICE arrests would go viral and social media posts of ICE sightings would send shivers down our spines. Now even the most notable arrests have faded away: Who has been released? Who has been deported? Who is still missing?” Gessen wrote.
