Newcastle-Sunderland match halted after report of racism towards Lutsharel Geertruida

In a statement, Sunderland said: “Lutsharel has our full support and we commend him for the courage and leadership he showed in reporting this incident to the match officials.
“Racism is completely unacceptable. It is disgusting and has no place in our game or society.
“We accept Newcastle United’s statement and expect those responsible to be identified and held accountable.
“There can be no tolerance, excuses or uncertainty for such events.
“Football should be a safe and inclusive environment for everyone, without exception, and we will continue to work with the relevant authorities to support this aim.”
Sunderland boss Regis le Bris said: “He [Lutsharel Geertruida] looks good. Accurate reporting and management of the situation is unacceptable and important. “He looks good but we need to support him.”
Newcastle’s Eddie Howe added: “We do not condone racism in any form and the club will investigate this.”
Newcastle were 1-0 ahead of their Tyne-Wear rivals at the time, but the match eventually ended with Sunderland leading 2-1 thanks to Brian Brobbey’s late winner.
The season-opening Premier League match between Liverpool and Bournemouth in August was stopped after Cherries forward Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by an Anfield fan.
