September 20, 2025 03:30 | News

Optus may face millions of dollars and legal penalties after preventing people from making three zero calls after raising a network with a boat and resulting in three deaths, including an eight -week -old child.

Telco adopted up to 600 households in South Australia, Western Australia and Northern Region on Thursday.

SA police said that an eight -week -old child from the town of Gawler and a 68 -year -old woman from Queenstown suburb had died.

Optus CEO Stephen Rue died of at least three customers in South Australia and one in Western Australia, two of them were unable to search for emergency services.

Minister of Communication Anika Wells said that the incident was “incredibly serious and unacceptable”.

“The effect of this failure had tragic consequences and my personal thoughts are with those who lost one loved one,” he said.

Authorized, all telecommunications providers are obliged to make sure that they carry emergency service calls and this deduction will be investigated extensively, he added.

Rue said Optus maintains “welfare controls üzere to determine other customer effects.

Network technical problem has been solved since then and an internal investigation has been launched.

Rue, at a press conference on Friday night, said, “I wish the families and friends of the deceased and condolences to the most sincere and heartfelt condolences.”

The incident comes almost two years after Australia’s second largest telecommunication network was interrupted by more than 10 million customers and businesses in November 2023 for more than 16 hours.

Although people were still possible on a mobile phone, they could not call Triple-Zero on fixed line devices.

Telco was sentenced to more than $ 12 million to violate emergency call rules during a country -wide deduction.

The communication guard could not provide urgent call access to the Optus 2145, and then found that he did not perform welfare controls for 369 people who tried to call Triple-Zero.

Mr. Rue worked as the General Manager of the company from Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, who resigned from 2023 deduction in 2024.
