Kremlin mocks Keir Starmer amid ‘Daddy’ Donald Trump threats | World | News

Vladimir Putin’s right-hand man has mocked Sir Keir Starmer’s response to Donald Trump’s threats. Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund and Ukraine negotiator, suggested Britain was panicking in its response to the Prime Minister’s threat of tariffs if Trump opposes Greenland plans.

The Kremlin’s envoy to peace talks with Washington used the X to mock Starmer’s defense of his decision to send a British Army officer to Greenland. He said: “Panicked Starmer calls his father’s tariffs ‘completely wrong’.” Putin’s close friend later claimed that the taxes showed that “Left-wing, globalist EU/UK elites have failed.”

Dmitriev is one of several influential Russians who regularly use social media, especially X, to provoke and ridicule European leaders.

He also accused Britain of interfering in US elections and suggested this could be a factor in the tariff threat.

Last night, Donald Trump said Britain and other countries sending military officers to Greenland were “playing this very dangerous game” when imposing tariffs.

In a statement on the Truth Social network, Mr Trump said: “We have subsidized Denmark, all the European Union countries and others for years without charging them duties or any other fees.

He added: “These countries that are playing this very dangerous game have introduced a level of risk that is not defensible or sustainable.

“Therefore, for the preservation of global peace and security, it is imperative to take strong measures to end this dangerous situation quickly and without question.

“Beginning February 1, 2026, a 10% Tariff will apply to all goods shipped to the United States from all above-mentioned Countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Finland). On June 1, 2026, the Tariff will be increased to 25%.

“This Tariff shall be due and payable until an Agreement for the Complete and Complete acquisition of Greenland shall be reached.”

In response, Sir Keir said: “Our position on Greenland is very clear – it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is a matter for Greenlanders and Danes.

“We have also made clear that Arctic Security is important for all of NATO and that our allies must collectively do more to counter the Russian threat from different parts of the Arctic.

“Imposing tariffs on allies in order to ensure the collective security of NATO allies is completely wrong. Of course, we will pursue this directly with the US administration.”
