A few days ago, Gujarat ATS foiled an ISIS-linked terror plot by a Hyderabad-based doctor. The doctor was extracting Ricin, a deadly poison. Former Chief of AIIMS National Poison Information Centre, Dr. YK Gupta explains the dangers of ricin, a toxic protein derived from castor seeds. It has no specific antidote, making it a potent biological threat. Ricin is dangerous only in criminal or terrorist use; Castor oil and processed seed cakes are safe because heat denatures the protein.
