D-Calif. Governor Gavin Newsom announced during an interview with CBS on Sunday that he would begin giving “serious thoughts” about a possible 2028 run after the 2026 midterms.

“Is it fair to say that you will seriously consider this issue after the 2026 midterms?” CBS reporter Robert Costa asked Newsom.

The governor of California responded: “Yes, otherwise I would be lying.”

“I would be lying. And I can’t do that,” he added.

Costa followed up and noted that the governor always said he would need a compelling reason to run for president.

“Are you getting closer to understanding your own reason and your own decision?” he asked.

Newsom responded by quoting Friedrich Nietzsche: “If you have a compelling why, you can endure any how.”

“I think the biggest challenge for anyone running for any office is that people are going to buy into you if you don’t have that reason. You’re doing it for the wrong reasons. And look, that’s going to be determined by faith,” Newsom added.

The liberal governor also talked about his redistricting efforts in California, what he says is a crisis of masculinity in the country, and how he uses his podcast to highlight that.

“We also have a crisis with masculinity and men. Men are struggling. And multiple ethics, meaning suicide rates, dropout rates, suspension rates, loneliness, despair, deaths from despair, are off the chart. What’s going on in this country is a serious crisis. Democrats haven’t focused on this. And I’m very proud of the important work we’ve done on this, but I’m also using the podcast to highlight that,” he said.

The California governor argued in a September interview that he feared there would be no election in 2028.

“I’m afraid we won’t be able to have an election in 2028,” he told late-night host Stephen Colbert. “I truly say this from the bottom of my soul. Unless we wake up to code red, what’s going on in this country, we wake up sober realizing how serious this moment is.”
