NFL broadcaster makes sly government shutdown joke

Cris Collinsworth, a former Cincinnati Bengals star and NBC broadcaster, made a joke about the government shutdown during the Seattle Seahawks’ disastrous 38-14 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday night.
The NBC broadcast showed the U.S. Capitol as the game shifted from the third to the fourth quarter.

“There’s a quiet place,” Collinsworth said, causing play-by-play Mike Tirico to chuckle.
The government shutdown will enter its sixth week. President Donald Trump said in an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” that he believes Democrats will eventually give in to Republican demands because the two sides have never been at the negotiating table.
“I think they have to do it,” Trump said. “And if they don’t vote, that’s their problem.”

Meanwhile, the Seahawks were hammering the Commanders after Sam Darnold’s hot start. The experienced point guard completed his first 17 passes and did not make a completion error until the first throw of the third quarter.
Darnold had four first-half touchdowns; two to Tory Horton and one each to Cody White and Elijah Arroyo. Seattle scored 28 points before the halftime whistle.
Darnold was 21-of-24 for 330 passing yards. He made an interception in the second half.
Seahawks tight end AJ Barner had a rushing touchdown in the game and Jaxson Smith-Njiba led Seattle with eight catches for 129 yards.

Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels left the game early when he suffered a gruesome arm injury. He was 16/22 with 153 passing yards and one interception. He scored a rushing touchdown, as did running back Chris Rodriguez.
Seattle improved to 5-2 this year. Washington fell to 3-5.
