NFL news: Texans kicker sparks debate over extra-point try

As the Houston Texans took a four-point lead over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, 20-16, fans debated whether kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn made a successful extra point.

The controversy began when Texans winger Nico Collins ran the ball seven yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Fairbairn entered the game to score the extra point. He kicked the ball and appeared to miss it down the left.

But NFL officials said the hit was fine. Whether the authorities made the right decision sparked debate on social media.

CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore explained that Fairbairn’s shot went just wide of the outside edge of the goal. Per NFL rules, the hit could not be reviewed.

Houston grabbed the key and was able to hold off the Colts the rest of the way for the win.

CJ Stroud made his debut after suffering a concussion. He was 22-of-35 with 276 passing yards, one interception and two sacks.

Texans running back Nick Chubb had a touchdown along with 34 rushing yards. Woody Marks led Houston with 64 yards receiving.

Collins had five catches for 98 yards, along with the rushing touchdown.

Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, playing with a broken fibula, was 14-of-27 for 201 passing yards and two touchdown passes. His touchdown passes went to Alec Pierce and Tyler Warren.

Pierce led Indianapolis with four catches for 78 yards. Warren had three catches for 22 yards.

Houston’s win tightened the AFC South divisional race. After beating the Tennessee Titans, the Jacksonville Jaguars moved past the Colts into first place in the division, with the Texans sitting just behind both Jacksonville and Indianapolis.
