NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Rajamahendravaram Milk Contamination Tragedy

The National Human Rights Commission immediately took cognizance of the alleged milk contamination incident in Rajamahendravaram, which triggered widespread concern across Telugu States, and notified the Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary and Director General of Police to seek a detailed report within two weeks.

According to official reports, 17 people have lost their lives so far in the incident reported in parts of East Godavari district last month, while three others are still receiving treatment in hospitals. Preliminary investigation revealed that milk supplied to more than 100 households was contaminated with ethylene glycol, a toxic refrigerant chemical believed to have leaked from refrigeration equipment at an unauthorized dairy unit.

The contamination was first discovered after several residents developed acute kidney complications, vomiting and anuria. Authorities had earlier arrested the milk vendor and launched a multi-agency investigation into food safety and supply tracking lapses.
