NHS doctor is charged with ‘multiple counts of inviting support for Hamas’

A suspended NHS doctor has been charged with four counts of soliciting support for Hamas.

Dr Rahmeh Aladwan, 31, was charged last year in relation to comments or other material published online about the banned terrorist organisation.

The alleged incidents for which he was charged under the Terrorism Act occurred on four separate occasions, on 23 July, 23 August, 7 October and 31 December.

He was also charged with publishing or distributing written material likely to incite racial hatred in relation to an incident on November 19 last year.

The doctor was also accused of using words likely to incite racial hatred on King Charles Street in Westminster, central London, on July 21 last year.

Aladwan was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on Thursday at his home in Pilning, South Gloucestershire, for breaching bail following previous arrests.

The trainee trauma and orthopedic surgeon was taken to a police station in central London where he was charged.

Aladwan was remanded in custody and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

These two counts were both under the Public Order Act.

His arrest followed an investigation by the Met’s Public Order Crime Squad.

Aladwan, who is Palestinian of British origin, is also currently the subject of an investigation by the General Medical Council (GMC).

In November, he was suspended from training for 15 months.

The GMC’s social media rules state that clinic staff have ‘freedom of belief, privacy and expression’.

These need to be ‘balanced with possible effects on the rights and interests of other people’, he adds.
