A Nicaraguan man living illegally in Pittsburgh faces up to 20 years in prison for allegedly launching a violent attack on federal agents — ramming a law enforcement vehicle, trying to disarm an officer and biting an agent — following a failed attempt to purchase a firearm.
A federal grand jury in Pittsburgh indicted Darwin Alexander Davila-Perez, 33, on Wednesday for assaulting a federal officer.
The investigation began when the Department of Homeland Security learned that Davila-Perez was trying to buy a gun from a local dealer. During this transaction, he allegedly claimed to be a US citizen.
The sale was blocked after the seller discovered that he was a Nicaraguan citizen with no legal status under U.S. Federal law that prohibits the illegal possession or purchase of firearms in the country.

On December 17, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents attempted to pull Davila-Perez over to take him into custody for immigration violations. According to authorities, Davila-Perez did not pull over when agents activated his emergency lights; he responded.
According to the indictment, Davila-Perez put his car in reverse and crashed into an occupied law enforcement vehicle before jumping out to escape.

All the while, officers gave Davila-Perez commands in both English and Spanish to stop and show his hands. But authorities say he ignored those orders until he was eventually put down.
