Ebola Outbreak and India’s Preparedness Measures

New Delhi: The Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa has once again raised global public health concerns, with Indian authorities closely monitoring the evolving situation and health experts stressing the importance of surveillance to prevent possible import into the country. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) after more than 300 suspected cases and nearly 90 deaths were reported.
While Indian health ministry officials stated that the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) is following the developments closely, they also said that a review meeting was held to evaluate India’s preparedness, screening mechanisms and intervention strategy in case any suspected cases are detected in the country.
Ebola is a serious and often fatal disease caused by the Ebola virus, which is spread through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, or tissues of infected people or animals.
Symptoms of Ebola disease can be sudden and include fever, fatigue, weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. These are followed by symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rash, and deterioration in kidney and liver functions.
While there is no current Ebola outbreak in India, experts said international travel and global connectivity mean countries must remain vigilant against infectious disease threats.
India reported its only known case of Ebola in November 2014, when a 26-year-old man traveling from Liberia tested positive for the virus in Delhi. Health officials then isolated the patient and conducted extensive contact tracing to prevent further spread, according to government sources.
WHO previously declared Ebola outbreaks as PHEIC during the 2014 West African outbreak that killed more than 11,000 people and the 2019 outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The latest declaration marks the third time Ebola has triggered WHO’s highest-level global health alert.
The disease has previously caused major epidemics in many African countries; mortality rates ranged from 25 to 90 percent, depending on the type and health care response.
Professor, Department of Community Medicine, AIIMS Delhi Sanjay Rai said the risk in India is currently low.
“India has robust airport screening systems and disease surveillance mechanisms compared to previous years. But any outbreak anywhere in the world is a reminder that infectious diseases do not respect borders. Travelers from affected countries need to be closely monitored,” Rai told PTI.
He said Ebola does not spread through the air like Covid-19, which limits the chance of large-scale community transmission.
“The virus is spread primarily through direct contact with infected body fluids, contaminated surfaces, or unsafe burial practices. Healthcare workers and family caregivers are at higher risk if appropriate protective measures are not followed,” he explained.
Dr Rai noted that India’s large population and crowded healthcare environments could pose challenges if an imported case is not detected.
“Therefore, awareness among doctors, airport authorities and surveillance teams is extremely important. Even a single imported infection must be managed quickly to prevent secondary transmission,” he said.
Head of Medanta Internal Medicine, Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, Dr. Randip Guleria said India’s preparedness has improved significantly post the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The country now has stronger laboratory networks, emergency response systems and infection control awareness. Still, hospitals must remain vigilant, especially when dealing with international travelers with unexplained symptoms of fever or bleeding,” Dr Guleria told PTI.
He said there was no need to panic because Ebola requires close physical contact to be transmitted.
“People should understand that casual contact or simply traveling in the same public space does not usually spread Ebola. The focus should be on early reporting, infection control practices and avoiding misinformation,” he added.
Dr Guleria said preventive measures include stringent screening of passengers coming from affected areas, rapid isolation of suspected patients, use of personal protective equipment by healthcare workers and proper hand hygiene.
WHO has repeatedly emphasized the importance of public awareness, safe burial practices, and timely medical intervention during Ebola outbreaks.
Public health experts stressed that strengthening global cooperation, transparent reporting and investment in disease surveillance are vital to preventing future epidemics from becoming international emergencies.
