No Russia, Ukraine strikes on energy targets: Zelenskiy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that neither Russia nor Ukraine attacked energy targets following the agreement initiated by the USA for Russia to refrain from such attacks.

“In fact, there were no attacks on energy facilities in all our regions from Thursday night to Friday,” Zelenskiy said in his nightly video speech.

“Ukraine is ready to refrain from reciprocal strikes, and today we did not attack Russia’s energy facilities.”

He said Russia was trying to “redirect” its military activity by attacking logistics such as railway junctions.

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin accepted US President Donald Trump’s request to stop the bombardment of Kiev in order to create “favorable conditions” for peace talks.

Russian attacks on energy infrastructure in Kiev in recent weeks have left hundreds of thousands of people without heat for days as temperatures dropped below minus 15 degrees.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Putin’s acceptance, saying, “President Trump indeed made a personal request to President Putin to refrain from attacking Kiev for a week, until February 1, in order to create favorable conditions for negotiations.” he said.

Zelenskiy said Ukraine was ready to respond by stopping attacks on Russian refining infrastructure and that this was “more of an opportunity than a deal.”

Kiev residents were skeptical that the brief energy ceasefire would lead to a lasting recovery and said they had no choice but to endure what has become the darkest and coldest winter of the nearly four-year war.

“I trust neither Putin nor Trump, so even if he (Putin) obeys now, he will stockpile missiles and continue firing,” said a retiree from Kiev.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched ballistic missiles and 111 unmanned aerial vehicles in recent night attacks against Ukraine.

Zelenskiy said the missile damaged warehouses of a US company in the northeastern Kharkiv region, without identifying the company.

The Ukrainian army said it hit several Russian logistics facilities in the occupied Zaporozhye region in the southeast of the country.

A report from the Russian Ministry of Defense showed that “the number of Ukrainian drones shot down overnight fell to 18 last night compared to 168 shot down on New Year’s Eve.”

Zelenskiy said the opportunity to reduce the conflict by suspending air strikes on energy facilities was suggested by the United States at Abu Dhabi talks last weekend.

He added that the date or location of the follow-up round of talks, which are currently expected to be held again this Sunday in the United Arab Emirates, may change.

Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev will travel to Miami on Saturday for meetings with members of the Trump administration, two sources with knowledge of the visit told Reuters.
