Nokia unveils world’s largest R&D facility for fixed networks in Chennai; expands investment to ₹270 crore

Chennai, Feb 7 (PTI) Nokia has opened the world’s largest research and development facility for fixed networks in Tamil Nadu, strengthening the state’s leadership in telecommunications, Industries Minister TRB Rajaa said on Saturday.
The Minister noted that the expansion of the Finland-based telecom giant follows an MoU signed with the Tamil Nadu government during Prime Minister MK Stalin’s visit to the US in August 2024.
“Dear Tamil Nadu, welcome Nokia’s world’s largest R&D facility for fixed networks. Yesterday (February 6), Nokia inaugurated the new facility at SIPCOT Siruseri in Chennai, creating over 200 senior jobs in the state,” Rajaa said in a social media post. he said.
The facility is expected to serve as a key global testing ground for innovations in 10G, 25G, 50G and 100G optical networks, fixed wireless access and other advanced technologies.
“This expansion dates back to the MoU signed during Prime Minister MK Stalin’s visit to the US in 2024. What was committed then has now translated into concrete investment on the ground,” he said.
Rajaa emphasized that Nokia’s initial investment phase has been increased so far: ₹270 crore more than originally planned ₹220 crore, while the second phase is expected to involve around 220 crore. ₹300 crore.
“The Siruseri facility will host Nokia’s largest fixed network R&D laboratory worldwide, focusing on advanced fixed network broadband technologies,” he added.
Rajaa said the investment strengthens Tamil Nadu’s leadership in telecommunications and makes the state a preferred destination for global deep technology and engineering hubs.
