As KTSM previously reported, shortly after 10:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 25-year-old Britney Torres was driving her Ford Mustang the wrong way on I-10 West in Mesa in West El Paso. At the same time, 25-year-old Jesus Chico Jr. was traveling westbound on I-10 in a Honda Civic. Torres shot Chico Jr. head-on, resulting in his death.
According to court documents, moments before the crash, an El Paso Police Department (EPPD) officer observed the Ford Mustang traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of North Desert and entering I-10 West while traveling eastbound. Both roads run parallel to each other.
The same officer was later flagged down by a passerby saying there had been a head-on collision in the area. The officer attended the scene of the crash and observed both vehicles had “major front end damage.”
The officer said Torres was the only person in the Mustang and then Chico Jr. observed an unconscious man, identified as , sitting in the driver’s seat of a Honda Civic. Torres was taken to the hospital and Chico Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene, according to court documents.
Officers at the scene also found a “drinking aggressor” clearly visible in Torres’ vehicle, particularly in the passenger-side upholstery.
According to court documents, officers were later dispatched to Las Palmas Medical Center to interview Torres, and Fire and Medical Services (FMS) personnel alerted them that Torres had admitted to drinking alcohol and drinking an unknown number of shots. FMS said they were also able to detect the odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and person.
DWI Task Force officers interviewed Torres and she said she believed she was on Loop 375 instead of I-10 West on her way home from visiting her sister before the crash. Torres also admitted to stopping by Spec’s to purchase small shots and drinking two or three of them himself.
Court documents show he failed a field sobriety test.
Torres was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on $150,000 bail.
