Nvidia H20 chips pose security concerns for China, claims state media amid backdoor entry allegations

After marking concerns about the rear door entrance of China’s Tech Major Nvidia’s H20 chips H20, the state media now claims that these chips pose security threats for Beijing.

The H20 chips are neither technologically advanced nor environmentally friendly, a social media account of the Chinese state media, Yuyuan Tantian.

“A kind of chip is neither environmentally friendly nor developed nor safe, as consumers, we definitely have the option to not buy.”

At the end of 2023, Nvidia created H20 artificial intelligence chips, especially for the Chinese market following the export restrictions on the US advanced AI chips. The Trump administration initially banned sales in April due to increasing trade tensions with China, but in July, the ban lifted the ban.

China’s cyber -field regulator announced on July 31 that he called NVIDIA to a meeting and asked the US chipser to explain whether the H20 chips had any rear door security problems, which is unauthorized methods that jump to authentication or security controls.

Nvidia explains

NVIDIA then said that its products were not “backdoors” that can allow remote access or control. The company confirmed this position again on Sunday when a comment was requested about Yuyuan Tandian’s article and stressed that it was not the background of their chips.

“Cyber security is critical for us,” said Nvidia on Thursday, “he said. “Nvidia’s chips do not have a ‘backdoors’ that will give a distant way to access or control anyone.”

However, Yuyuan Tantian said that the Nvidia chips can perform functions such as “remote closure” through a “back door”.

This interpretation came after Nvidia was criticized by People’s Daily, another Chinese state media organization.

At the beginning of this month, People’s Daily said NVIDIA should provide “convincing security evidence” to alleviate the concerns of Chinese users about security risks and recover market confidence.
