NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani backed by UK’s Jeremy Corbyn

Former UK Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn, who was expelled from his party over allegations of antisemitism, was working Sunday to help Zohran Mamdani tighten her grip on New York City.

Mamdani’s alliance with Corbyn comes just days after polls opened in the New York City mayoral race, where he is the Democratic progressive challenger.

Known for his criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and his alliance with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), like Corbyn, Mamdani has faced accusations of antisemitism.

Corbyn, now an independent MP, announced his support for Mamdani via Facebook on Sunday, posting a photo of himself holding a “North London 4 Zohran” shirt.

“Let’s get Zohran across the finish line for an affordable New York for everyone!” The article was read.

“Corbyn backs Mamdani. What a surprise.” one social user commented. “Why are you intervening in influencing politics in New York?” someone else asked.

Corbyn also shared a phone banking link hosted by the DSA’s NYC branch, which directed volunteers to a website urging voters to mobilize for Mamdani.

The website reads: “Join Jeremy Corbyn, former leader of NYC-DSA and the UK Labor Party, as he urges New Yorkers to vote for Zohran Mamdani for mayor. Election day is just two days away, and every conversation brings us closer to winning a better New York.”

Corbyn’s well-documented history of allegations of antisemitism dates back to 2020, when the UK’s Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) found that the Labor Party under his leadership had committed unlawful acts of discrimination against Jewish members.

Corbyn was suspended and formally expelled from the Labor Party in 2024 for his response to the report. He has since founded a new left-wing political party called “Your Party” and continues to deny all allegations of antisemitism.

Reacting to the collaboration, former New York Governor and mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo immediately condemned Mamdani’s decision, writing about X.

“Having Jeremy Corbyn whose party has been found to have committed unlawful acts of discrimination against Jews under his leadership, @ZohranKMamdani’s phone banking says all you need to know.

New York doesn’t need the politics of moral compromise. “We need leadership that rejects anti-Semitism, extremism and division in every form and at every corner,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, a week before the election, campaign finance watchdog group the Coolidge Reagan Foundation filed two criminal complaints against Mamdani, alleging he received illegal donations from foreign donors.

The Mamdani campaign maintains that any issues regarding financial contributions have been resolved.
