NYC subway fare gates easily bypassed in viral videos showing failures

New York City’s new subway ticket booths are drawing mockery online, as viral videos show passengers easily breaching the barriers.

What started as isolated demonstrations has become an online trend, with some influencers dubbing it the “Olympics of Fare Evasion.” Clips of the performances have reached millions of views on social media platforms.

The New York Post reported Manhattan’s Broadway-Lafayette St. A group of people ran and jumped over the fare gates at the station and organized a competition late at night. The winner was rewarded with a check for $3, the cost of the subway ride.

“It’s still incredibly edible. It’s not really effective, it’s just expensive,” said Danny Fisher, who organized the “Wage Evasion Olympics” last week.

By late 2025, MTA debuts three new gate designs at 20 stations instead of their usual turnstiles. One of the new gate designs is expected to be rolled out at 150 stations in the city over the next few years. The paid program is expected to cost New Yorkers $1.1 billion.

Brooklyn influencer @officialkiingspiider posted videos of cyclists crashing through the MTA’s new gates, garnering millions of views.

In a clip released on Tuesday, the influencer is seen sliding through the door blindfolded using a cane as part of the stunt. Another video posted a few weeks ago shows him walking through the gate as another driver exits. This video exceeded 18 million views on Instagram.

Brooklyn native He told FOX 5 New York: “We need to focus more on issues like the safety and service of the subway system. A lot of people are getting hurt.”

He also said the MTA spent millions of dollars on new gates and that people filming the demonstrations were respectful during interactions with police.

The MTA defended the rollout, telling FOX 5 NY: “This is a free pilot program featuring technologies from the world’s leading companies, and so far most riders seem to like it.”

“Less concerning are the views of minor league trolls hijacking New Yorkers’ vehicles to gain internet attention,” they added.
