Australia risks US ire with Palestine recognition move

13 August 2025 03:30 | News

The decision to announce the recognition of Palestine after its allies may have allowed Australia to escape the US reaction.

Prime Minister Anthony Albania, Australia, Gaza, after the pressure to alleviate civilian pain in September at the United Nations General Assembly meeting in the United Nations General Assembly to recognize the Palestinian state will participate in England, Canada and France announced.

The United States has long been one of the most important allies of Australia for a long time, but for decades, it has been very opposed to the recognition of Palestine for decades.

Some argue that Australia’s decision to break from the United States may force the bilateral relationship, while Finders University International Relations Lecturer Jessica Genauer said that the diplomatic account of the federal government helps to reduce any impact.

“Australia waited until other important countries said they planned to get to know Palestine orum I don’t think they will be chosen by the US, Dr Dr Genauer said.

“The Trump administration opposes the countries that recognize Palestine, but I think they will put Australia in another country and will not be harmful to Australia’s relationship.”

Since US President Donald Trump began his second period, the Labor Party government has deliberately chose not to be aligned very closely in its policy aspects.

Instead, Australia worked closely with European countries and other partners to make it a part of a powerful medium network.

He said that this approach was used to respond to the invasion of Ukraine and is now used with Palestinian recognition.

Opposition leader Sussan Ley, Australia’s state of state with the United States “disrespect” and any ceasefire of the United States will endanger peace because of the mediator, he said.

However, the Prime Minister defended the decision.

“President Trump made what he wanted to see peace in the region. Australia wants to see peace in the region,” he said.

“We take our sovereign decisions as a nation state in the national interests of Australia and align ourselves with countries that think similarly.”

Although recognizing Palestine will not change anything for two million people in Gaza, UN projects are faced with serious food insecurity, Dr. Genauer said that the movement is important because it shows that countries are looking for any way to change the situation.

More than 140 of the 193 United Nations member states already know Palestine, but Australia – a strong medium power – next to the UN Security Council will provide significant pressure.

“The United States is now quite isolated in their positions that prevent this recognition,” he said.
