Officer who fatally shot Tamir Rice fired from West Virginia ranger position | Tamir Rice

The former Cleveland officer who fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014 was fired from his job as a ranger at a West Virginia resort; This is the fourth known time in seven years that he has left a small department following public outcry.

Timothy Loehmann was fired from his position at the Snowshoe Resort Community District (SRCD) on Friday. District board announces Loehmann’s firing a statement after their emergency meeting.

“Loehmann’s determination to harm other people appears pathological, as does the dastardly poor judgment required of any public official who hires him,” said Subodh Chandra, Rice’s family’s Cleveland-based attorney.

Rice, who was black, was playing with a pellet gun outside a Cleveland recreation center on Nov. 22, 2014, when he was shot and killed by Loehmann seconds after the police officer and his partner arrived. White cops told investigators Loehmann yelled three times at Rice to put his hands up.

The shooting sparked outcry over police treatment of Black people and systemic racism, especially after a grand jury decided not to indict Loehmann or his partner.

Cleveland filed a $6 million lawsuit over Rice’s death. The city fired Loehmann for lying on his application to become a police officer.

In 2018, Loehmann took a part-time position with a police department in southeast Ohio. He withdrew his application days later after Rice’s mother and others criticized the hiring.

He was sworn in as the only police officer in Tioga, Pennsylvania, in 2022 and left amid backlash after his hiring.

Last year, the probationary officer in the City of White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia, resigned from his position, and the police chief responsible for hiring him also resigned.
