Ohio State snaps four-game losing stream to Michigan in dominant Ann Arbor win

It’s been zero days since Ohio State beat Michigan.

The top-ranked team in the country took sweet revenge against its arch-rival at the Big House, winning 27-9 in a four-game losing streak.

It looked like it was all Michigan for the first few minutes, as the Wolverines hit a field goal on their first drive, beat Julian Sayin on the Buckeyes’ second play, and then hit another field goal.

But the field goals would be a detriment compared to the Buckeyes’ ensuing field goals.

Ohio State’s first score came on a field goal that cut its deficit in half. But early in the second, Sayin found Jeremiah Smith for a 35-yard field goal. The play was reviewed for a potential touchback, and it was revealed that Smith momentarily lost control of the ball and was unable to regain it until it went out of bounds beyond the pylon, which could have resulted in a touchback. However, the referees approved this call.

Michigan took another field goal, but the Buckeyes drove down the field again, ending the first half with a goal by Brandon Innis to go up by eight points. Then it started snowing, and that seemed to work in Ohio State’s favor.

Ohio State and Michigan traded punts to start the second half, but Michigan only had an 11-yard field goal that gave OSU great field position. On just the second play of the drive, Carnell Tate, playing in his first game since Nov. 1, kicked a 50-yard field goal to put the Buckeyes ahead 24-9.

Ohio State went on a 20-play drive after forcing another punt. The Wolverines were able to kick a field goal, but it made it a three-possession game, and all of that wasted a lot of time. The Buckeyes were up 27-9 with 8:10 left and there was nothing Michigan could do the rest of the way.

Sayin completed 19 of 26 passes for 233 yards, while the Buckeyes rushed for 186 more yards. Michigan’s Bryce Underwood went 8-for-18 for 63 yards, while the Wolverines rushed for 100 yards.

Ohio State had last beaten Michigan since 2019, and last year’s loss to Columbus as a three-touchdown favorite was the biggest upset in the rivalry’s history. Michigan players planted their flags at Columbus midfield, sparking a fight. Of course, these were bulletin board materials the Buckeyes would remember for about 365 days.

Ohio State couldn’t raise its flag right away because Michigan players retained their midfield logo. But the players had the opportunity to celebrate with scores of red-clad fans in Ann Arbor.
