US President Donald Trump said late Sunday that Cuba was “ready to fall” after US forces captured Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro days earlier.
Trump added that “many Cubans were killed” during the US operation to capture the Venezuelan leader.
“Cuba is ready to fall,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, adding that it would be difficult for Havana to “hold on” without receiving heavily subsidized Venezuelan oil.
“I don’t think we need any action. It looks like it’s going to fall,” he added.
Trump said, “Cuba no longer has any income. They get all of their income from Venezuela, from Venezuelan oil.”
“They’re not getting anything. Cuba is literally ready to fall. And there are a lot of wonderful Cuban Americans who would be very happy about that.”
Cuban casualties during US operation
Speaking in more detail about the casualties during the US operation, Trump said there were “unfortunately a lot of deaths on the other side.”
Meanwhile, Havana officials said that 32 Cubans were killed in the US attack on Caracas.
Trump continued his threats against another of Maduro’s neighbors: “Venezuela is very sick. Colombia is also very sick, run by a sick man who likes to make cocaine and sell it to the United States. And he won’t be able to do that for a very long time. Let me tell you.”
Asked if he meant a US operation against Colombia, Trump said: “Sounds good.”
Capture of Maduro and US control of Venezuela
Trump’s comments came a day after US forces captured and detained Maduro and his wife in a surprise attack on Caracas. The Venezuelan leader and his wife, Cilia Flores, will appear in court in New York later Monday on drug-related charges.
Trump also insisted the US was ‘responsible’ for Venezuela, even though the country’s Supreme Court appointed the country’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez as interim leader.
He also repeated his threat that he would be sent back to Venezuela if the US military “did not act properly”.
Trump has made no secret of his ambition to expand the US presence in the Western Hemisphere and revive the 19th-century Monroe Doctrine, which stated that Latin America fell within the US sphere of influence. Trump called the 21st century version the “Don-roe Doctrine.”
The US president has threatened both Colombia and Cuba before. He said over the weekend that Petro needed to “watch his ass” and that the political situation in Cuba was “something we will eventually talk about because Cuba is a failed nation.”
