2.89 crore voters dropped from UP draft rolls after SIR; 81.3% names retained, says state CEO

Around 2.89 crore voters, constituting 18.7 per cent of the electorate, were removed from the draft electoral roll of Uttar Pradesh after Special Intensive Revision (SIR); The Electoral Commission attributed the omissions to deaths, permanent migration and multiple registrations.

There are a total of 15.44 crore registered voters in the state, of which around 12.55 crore (representing 81.3 per cent of the population) are retained in the draft lists prepared after the revision exercise, according to the chief election officer of Uttar Pradesh, who said the exercise aims to improve the accuracy and integrity of the election database.
