South Florida dominates UAB just hours after stabbing incident

University of Alabama at Birmingham football players took the field in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday, just hours after the tragedy.
Two UAB players were allegedly stabbed by a teammate at the team’s practice center before the game against South Florida, a university official confirmed to Fox News Digital.
It was stated that both of them were hospitalized and their condition was stable. The names of the victims and the detained player were not disclosed.
Saturday’s game started at 3pm ET and USF cruised to a 48-18 victory.

An online inmate search at the Jefferson County Jail showed that 20-year-old Daniel Israel Mincey was arrested by UAB Campus Police just after noon on Saturday and is facing a charge of “aggravated assault – A to M – attempted murder.” The university has not confirmed whether Mincey was a player involved in the incident.

According to the UAB football staff, Mincey is a redshirt freshman who joined the team after one season at Kentucky.

There appeared to be concerns about whether the game would go ahead as planned given the incident, but a spokesperson confirmed the university had chosen to play.
A spokesman said: “We are grateful to report that the two players injured in this morning’s incident at the Football Operations Building are in a stable condition. Our thoughts are with them and their families pending their recovery. The suspect, another player, remains in custody and investigations are ongoing.”
USF quarterback Byrum Brown threw for 353 yards and five touchdowns in the blowout win. UAB took a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but USF scored 27 unanswered points.

The highlight of Brown’s day was a 60-yard touchdown pass to Mudia Reuben that gave USF a 24-10 lead on the first play of the third quarter. Nykahi Davenport added 117 rushing yards and a touchdown run for USF.

UAB quarterback Jalen Kitna had 230 passing yards but was also responsible for three costly interceptions.
