Old Dominion University shooting: One person dead and two injured | World | News

One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting at a university in Norfolk, Virginia. An unidentified gunman opened fire at an academic building at Old Dominion University around 10:43 a.m. local time on Thursday. Old Dominion University Police Chief Garrett Shelton said officers found the gunman dead inside the building around 10:50 a.m.

He said two of the victims were taken to the hospital, while the third took them away. One of the injured later died, while the condition of the other two is stable. Student Jennifer said she heard people saying “get out, get out, get out” as she was about to take the test.

“All of a sudden we heard a commotion. A lot of people gurgled and started getting up. The guy next to me and I looked at each other, we started running, and that’s when we heard gunshots,” he told WVEC.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the gunman was subdued by “a group of brave students.” He wrote about X: “Earlier today, a gunman opened fire at Old Dominion University, killing one person and wounding two others.

“The shooter is no longer alive thanks to a group of brave students who intervened and subdued him; these actions undoubtedly saved lives as well as quickness.”

Jennifer also praised the university’s handling of the incident as they were able to quickly communicate to students what was going on. He said: “I’m very, very proud of how quickly the situation was handled.”

Mr. Shelton said the investigation is ongoing and officers are combing the campus for evidence. He did not say how the attacker died.

He said: “We now have to search every room in that facility. There were students, faculty and staff that we found hiding.”

The university canceled classes for the rest of the day and Friday, but stressed there was no longer a threat. “Today was a tragic day for the Old Dominion University campus,” said President Brian Hemphill.
