“It was always you,” the couple wrote in a video leading up to the proposal on the streets of Milan.
Smart was clearly shocked at that moment; The video showed Baker holding the ring as his new fiancee raced on the ice below.

The two had been friends for a long time, but on the ice, the USA and Spain team were obvious rivals as they competed for the same prize.
At the 2022 Beijing Games and two World Championships, Baker and Smart competed against each other for gold medals.
Smart finished the 2022 Games ahead of Baker, moving up to eighth and 11th.

This time, Baker was in the stands for the Milan Cortina Games, while Smart was competing with her partner Tim Dieck in ice dancing. They finished the competition in ninth place.
Smart may not have finished the race the way he had hoped, but at least he didn’t leave Milan without some sort of hardware.
Baker won a bronze medal in her Olympic career, taking home it during the 2018 Winter Games. He has not been able to compete since 2023 due to injuries.
