While Dutch speed skater Jutta Leerdam broke the Olympic record in her gold medal-winning run on Monday, her fiancé Jake Paul could not control his emotions.
He was crying with joy.
Paul was standing in the stands, stunned to see Leerdam not only meet expectations of winning gold at the 2026 Milan Cortina games, but also break the 1,000-meter speed skating record with a time of 1:12.31.

Leerdam broke the previous record set by teammate Femke Kok just a few minutes into Leerdam’s run.
While the 27-year-old skater burst into tears after seeing him for the last time, Paul did the same in the stands, surrounded by his family, who couldn’t help but shed tears of joy, too.
This was Leerdam’s first Olympic gold medal and her second overall after winning silver in Beijing in 2022.

This time was extra special, considering Leerdam’s surprising fall during the Dutch Olympic Trials that forced her to withdraw from the race. There were rumors that his place at Milan Cortina was in doubt, but he was eventually selected for the Dutch team.
It was the right move.

Prior to Leerdam’s record-breaking run, Kok raced an impressive 1:12.59, resulting in the Dutch silver medal. Kok is also expected to compete for the gold medal in the 500 meters race later in the Games.
Completing the podium in the 1000 meter race, Japanese Miho Takagi took third place with a time of 1:13.95.
In the Americans, Erin Jackson came first with a time of 1:15.00. But it continued to drop down the list as skaters continued to advance.
Jackson’s teammate Brittany Bowe finished the race in fourth place and missed the medal with a time of 1:14.55.

Polarizing boxer Paul was no stranger to showing his emotions. While this was pure joy, he tweeted what appeared to be anger while talking about another major sporting event in America.
Paul called Super Bowl LX halftime show performer Bad Bunny a “fake citizen” ahead of the Puerto Rican’s performance at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday night. Paul took exception to Bad Bunny because the Grammy-winning artist spoke out against things like U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Explaining what he wrote Sunday night, Paul said in his latest tweet: “To clarify: I’m not calling anyone a ‘fake citizen’ just because they’re from Puerto Rico. I live in Puerto Rico and I love Puerto Rico.” “I have used my platform many times to support Puerto Rico and always will. But if you are publicly criticizing ICE, which is doing its job and openly hating America, I will talk about it. Period. That’s why I called out Hunter Hess.”

“If you take advantage of a country and the platform it gives you, but at the same time publicly disrespect it, that’s what I mean by being a fake citizen. And I agree that love is stronger than hate. Love America.”
Paul and Leerdam announced their engagement in a joint Instagram post in March 2025.
