Census 2027: Enumerators begin door-to-door visits for Houselisting phase in Kerala

Enumerators began house-to-house visits for the House Listing and Housing phase of the 2027 Census in Kerala on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

More than 61,000 enumerators, mostly teachers and other government employees, were deployed in the exercise. The state is divided into home listing blocks for data collection purposes.

Enumerators use a mobile app to collect data, and the entire operation will be managed through a dedicated web portal, the Census Management and Tracking System.

There are 682 census towns and 758 villages in Kerala. There are approximately 58,619 home listing blocks in the state.

A total of 34 questions were reported for the first stage. The Kerala government had issued a notification on May 7 aiming to ensure public cooperation in providing “accurate, clear” information in response to questions.

Census 2027, India’s first digital census, is being conducted in two phases. Phase I consists of House Registration and Housing Enumeration (HLO) to be conducted in Kerala from July 1 to July 30; and Phase II – Census – will be conducted in February 2027.

The demographic panel, which will examine population changes after the 2011 Census, is preparing a detailed survey for the States.

House searches, which will last until July 30, are carried out after a 15-day self-count period in June.
