British and French aircraft attack underground Islamic State weapons store in Syria | Syria

The British Ministry of Defense said British and French aircraft carried out a joint attack on an underground facility occupied by the Islamic State in Syria.

Guided bombs were used to target access tunnels in the mountainous region near the ancient city of Palmyra in the center of the country on Saturday evening.

“Early indications are that the target was successfully engaged,” the ministry said in a statement. Typhoon FGR4 fighter jets supported by the Voyager refueling tanker were used to bomb the target.

The ministry said that the facility was probably used to store weapons and explosives and that there were no civilians around.

Defense Secretary John Healey said the UK was determined to “stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies” to “prevent the resurgence” of ISIS.

He thanked members of the armed forces who participated in the operation “to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life.”

Western planes were patrolling to stop the resurgence of the Islamist militant group that ruled parts of Syria until 2019.
