ED vs CM Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal

Shortly after the raids, Mamata’s government took action. During this time, there was a heated argument between the CM and the ED officials.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday raided the office of political consultancy firm I-PAC (Indian Political Action Committee) and the residence of its director Prateek Jain. Although the ED frequently conducts such raids, it has sparked controversy as Prateek Jain is also the head of the IT unit of Mamata Banerjee’s party TMC and is considered a key member of its political strategy team. Additionally, I-PAC is developing strategies for the Trinamool Congress.
Shortly after the raids, Mamata’s government took action. First Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma and then CM Banerjee came to Jain’s house. During this time, there was a heated argument between the CM and the ED officials.
After a short stay, the TMC chief came out of the building with a green file in his hand. He accused the central agency of seizing TMC’s internal data and hard drives. So why did Mamata Banerjee personally go to the spot and confront the emergency officials? What prompted him to personally intervene in the investigation? What exactly was on TMC’s internal data and hard drives? What’s in the green folder Mamata took with her?
What did ED say?
ED said raids were carried out at 10 locations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with a coal smuggling case. According to the ED, the raid continued peacefully until CM Banerjee arrived.
– Mamata seized documents and electronic evidence with the help of police officers and administrative officials.
– The Emergency Service also stated that the raid was based on evidence and did not target any political party.
The ED approached the Calcutta High Court alleging obstruction of the investigation. A hearing on this matter is expected to be held on Friday. In other words, what Mamata calls a political vendetta is, according to ED, a case related to coal smuggling. The TMC chief accuses ED of seizing documents related to his party, but according to ED, it was Mamata who took the documents and evidence. The BJP demanded action against Mamata in this regard. This clash between Mamata and the probe agency comes just a few months before the assembly elections in the state. Similar events have occurred in the country before.
I-PAC is the agency that conceptualized Mamata’s ‘Khela Hobe’ campaign in the 2021 elections. It was thanks to the strength of this campaign that Mamata Banerjee defeated the BJP. Taking action against I-PAC before the election could derail his campaign. This is why Mamata Banerjee has adopted a confrontational stance. He also announced that he would hold a protest against this action in Kolkata on January 9.
