Ontario quietly signs new affordable housing deal with feds

Provincial and federal governments have signed threats to completely scrape a freshly -onio affordable housing agreement and financing of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of hundreds of millions of dollars after a tense tension for months.
After Doug Ford’s new cabinet swore in March and Mark Carney’s Prime Minister’s Office was built, Otawa and Queen’s Park signed an agreement to work together on the new residence.
The details of the need to sign the new agreement were included in an Ontario’s new Housing Minister in March, and recently taken by Global News using the laws of freedom of information.
The same agreement caused sorrow for months in the previous year, as two housing ministers traded thorns, accusations and threats.
Last year, federal and state housing ministers have repeatedly clashed over the national housing strategy-binary, long-term agreement to build a large-priced housing.
The fund provides money to provinces for affordable housing strategies. It is designed for 10 years with milestones to renew the funds.

Later, Canadian Housing Minister Sean Fraser wrote to Ontario counterpart Paul Calandra in March 2024, accusing Ontario of not being able to deliver thousands of new units to demand a “emergency” action in his affordable housing plan.
The letter launched Jabs, where Ottawa claimed that Ontawa rejected various affordable housing plans, renewed the old units and did not build new ones. The Federal government said it would get a new financing of $ 357 million until satisfied.
The Federal said that he would eventually remove Ontario and give the money directly to local service managers in the state. At that time, Calandra said it was exactly what he wanted.
In May 2024, “Weeks for weeks, ‘We are distributed through our service managers’ he said.
“Now, the big, bad Federal Housing Minister will punish Ontario. Do you know how it is? By distributing the money as we have done for the last 35 years: through our service managers.”
After the winter elections, Calandra is involved in education from residence, while Fraser is now the Minister of Justice.
A briefing binder prepared for Ontario Housing Minister Rob Flack, which came in March 2025, said that one of the first decisions to make would be to sign a new federal cutter agreement to ensure that affordable housing dollars continue to flow.
“The ministry personnel review the federal input and will offer options for the action plan for the decision -making plan,” the briefing binder, which was accessed through the laws of freedom of knowledge, said.
In March, two governments reached an agreement.
“The National Housing Strategy signed with Ontario (NHS) bilateral agreement is signed between 2019/20 – 2027/28.
“The financing objectives and consequences that are present within the scope of the agreement were mutually accepted by a three -year action plan for 2025/26 to 2027/28 in March 2025. This provides continuous availability of federal financing for Ontario.”
Flack’s office said he wanted to reset the relationship with the federal counterpart a year later. According to the Ontario government, the last agreement will give priority to lease -supported units.
