OpenAI to create desktop super app, combining ChatGPT app, browser and Codex app

OpenAI will combine its web browser, ChatGPT app, and Codex coding app into a single desktop super app, CNBC confirmed Thursday.
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, will oversee the change with assistance from OpenAI President Greg Brockman, according to a spokesperson. The new app aims to help OpenAI streamline the user experience and reduce fragmentation.
“Companies go through exploration and refocusing phases, both of which are critical,” Simo said. a post Thursday at X. “But when new bets start paying off, as we saw with Codex, it’s crucial to double down on them and avoid distractions. I’m really glad we took this moment.”

The effort to consolidate OpenAI products into a single application comes after Simo held an extensive meeting with employees earlier this month to answer employees’ questions about the company’s priorities. He said OpenAI is “aggressively pushing” toward high-throughput use cases.

OpenAI burst into the mainstream following the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot in 2022 and has since become one of the fastest-growing commercial entities on the planet. The company has released a slew of new products and experiences in recent months, including the Codex app and browser, and is racing to gain an edge over its rivals. Google and Anthropic.
