For years Australia’s grid operators have relied on gas-fired power stations to meet sudden demand. Unlike coal, gas can be ignited within minutes. The problem is that gas is no longer cheap and now produces only 5 percent of the east coast’s electricity. Gas prices on the east coast have tripled since LNG exports began in 2015, driving up household electricity bills.
