Family members identify victims of shooting at toddler’s birthday party in California | California
Details are beginning to emerge about the victims of the weekend shooting at a young child’s birthday party in Stockton, California, that killed four people and injured at least 11 others.
Among the dead were children ages eight, nine and 14, and a 21-year-old man who was shot at a banquet hall in the Central Valley city where they had gathered with at least 100 other people to celebrate the birthday of a two-year-old boy.
Authorities have not yet publicly identified any of the victims. However, family members of 14-year-old Amari Peterson and 21-year-old Susano Archuleta confirmed that their loved ones were killed in the shooting.
The violence sent shockwaves through the city of 320,000, located about 80 miles (130 km) east of San Francisco. While police continue to search for suspects, they said the incident may have been a targeted incident. Detectives believe more than one shooter may have been involved and are working on suspect descriptions.
San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Heather Brent said investigators welcome any information, even “rumours.”
Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi said the violence was gang-related, but investigators did not publicly approved whether this is the case or not.
While partygoers were getting ready to cut the cake on Saturday evening, gunshots were heard and people started running away.
“I just heard gunshots and then the shooter walked in,” said Patrick Peterson, Amari’s father. ABC10. “I turned around and looked at him and started to see him shooting, shooting, shooting, shooting.”
Amari Peterson was shot just above her heart, while her sister was grazed by a bullet, her father said. “All I can see is my son crawling on the ground and me trying to revive him,” the elder Peterson said.

The family of 21-year-old Susano Archuleta has confirmed that he was shot in the neck and killed on Saturday while attending a celebration for a friend’s daughter. His brother, Emmanuel Lopez, told the Los Angeles Times that Archuleta “died in my arms.”
Lopez said Archuleta was “full of life and energy.”
Stockton’s mayor said the eight-year-old victim killed Saturday attended a local school and had a parent who worked in the Stockton unified school district. Among those injured in the clash was activist Jasmine Dellafosse.
