‘Just like ceasefire…’: Congress questions Trump’s announcement of India-US trade deal, demands key details of an agreement | India News

The Congress on Tuesday slammed the Narendra Modi government for US President Donald Trump’s announcement of key aspects of the India-US trade deal, which include commitments on oil imports, tariff cuts and expanded market access.
The Congress party also demanded important details of the agreement, stating that the Modi government should secure Parliament and the entire country by sharing all information.
The Congress Party wrote on its official X account: “Just like the ceasefire, the announcement of the trade agreement was made by US President Trump. It was stated that the trade agreement was made ‘at Modi’s request’.”

The Congress party also questioned Trump’s claim that India would take action to reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers to the US to ‘zero’. Question marks have also been raised about the safety and interests of Indian farmers amid rumors of opening up the agricultural sector to the US.

Trump announces India-US trade deal
Donald Trump on Monday announced a much-awaited trade deal between India and the US in his Truth Social post. While Trump said that the US had reduced bilateral customs duties on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, he claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to stop buying Russian oil.
However, there was no confirmation from Trump regarding the removal of the additional 25% tariff on India’s purchase of Russian oil.
In making this announcement, Trump mentioned his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in the day. He said that Prime Minister Modi is one of his greatest friends and a strong and respected leader of his country.
However, the Indian government has not made any statement regarding the agreement with the USA so far.

Meanwhile, the opposition party has expressed concerns as to why such a big announcement is coming from Washington instead of the Indian government.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said India can only learn about its Government’s actions from President Trump or his appointees, calling it “Trump-nirbharta”.

He also claimed that Trump clearly appeared to have influence over Prime Minister Modi, to whom he said he eventually conceded. “Of course this can’t be the father of all deals. It’s clearly Mogambo Khush Hai in Washington,” he added.
