Six held as student dies after assault during freshers’ party at Latur college

A student allegedly died after being attacked during a first-year students’ party at a private college in Latur district of Maharashtra, leading the police to arrest six students, officials said.
The incident took place on October 8 during a freshers’ party held at the reputed college in MIDC area of Latur, police said on Wednesday (October 22).
A minor argument that started while dancing during the party quickly turned violent when the victim, Suraj Shinde, argued with a group of fellow students. It was claimed that the group, who had a fit of rage, attacked Shinde with sticks and fists.
Shinde suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died during treatment. Following the incident, the police detected a case of murder upon the complaint of one of the university students and arrested four students by October 16, according to the official statement.
Police reported that two more students were arrested on Tuesday, October 21, after they were revealed to be involved in the attack, bringing the number of those arrested to 6.
They said all of them were booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for murder, voluntarily causing hurt, causing grievous hurt by use of dangerous weapons or tools, criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to incite breach of peace and other offences.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Suresh Pogulwar is handling the investigation into the case.
