‘Our economy is Spursy… loads of opportunities and no results!’ Swedish politician takes bizarre swipe at Premier League strugglers Tottenham as they fight relegation

A Swedish politician strangely compared his country’s economy to the Premier League football club Tottenham Hotspur in his jaw-dropping speech in parliament.

Mikael Damberg said Sweden, much like Spurs in the politician’s view, was ‘squandering opportunities’ for its economy to develop despite having excellent conditions to achieve success.

The north Londoners find themselves in the middle of a relegation battle this season despite having a dazzling new stadium and arguably the best training facilities in world football.

“Naturally, I think of Tottenham Hotspur, also known as Spurs, one of the most exclusive and rich clubs in England, with a huge stadium and a dedicated and large fan base; everything has to be considered ‘the best team’,” he told the Swedish parliament.

‘Despite this, Tottenham find themselves in crisis. They are struggling at the bottom of the points table, just a few points above the relegation zone. Not because they lack resources or benefits, but because they squander opportunities.

‘They have lost direction and stability due to wrong decisions, general convulsions and short-term thinking.’

‘The club was called ‘Spursy’, [which is] When you have opportunities but don’t get results. Mr. President, this is exactly how the Minister of Finance views the Swedish economy.

‘Sweden has the strength, talent and resources. We have our companies, our workforce and our innovation capabilities. The conditions are there for the Swedish economy to thrive.’

He added: ‘The government risks making Sweden ‘Spursy’. This doesn’t work. ‘Sweden cannot perform like Tottenham.’

Many Spurs fans agree with Damberg’s assessment of the club’s current situation. The north Londoners remain just five points clear of the relegation zone following a worrying drop in results following the sacking of head coach Thomas Frank.

Former Juventus boss Igor Tudor has taken the reins until the end of the season and will face a tough opening game when Spurs host North London rivals and Premier League leaders Arsenal on Sunday.

Tudor said: ‘The situation is not easy, because as you know better than me we have a lot of injured players, so first we need to find the best system, the clothing that is currently available for the players.

‘So it’s a very special moment, it may seem strange but I believe what we need to focus on is education. So from today onwards training is important, because as I always like to say, Sunday and the match are the result of training.’
