Markapuram: The offices of the Collector and District Magistrate of the newly formed Markapuram district in Andhra Pradesh were inaugurated on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at R and R Colony on the outskirts of Markapuram town. The district was separated from Prakasam district to improve administrative efficiency and accessibility.

The event was also attended by Dola Sree Bala Veera Anjaneya Swamy, Minister of Social Welfare, Disabled and Elderly Welfare, Markapuram MLA Kandula Narayana Reddy, Giddalur MLA M. Ashok Reddy and other district officials.

The new Markapuram district covers Markapuram, Kanigiri, Yerragondapalem and Giddalur constituencies and these districts will be divided into two revenue divisions, Markapuram and Kanigiri.

The state government on Tuesday published the latest notifications regarding district reorganization, announcing the creation of Markapuram and Polavaram districts. With this, the total number of districts in Andhra Pradesh increased to 28 from December 31, 2025.

The restructuring aims to streamline the administration and bring it closer to the people of western Prakasam, who had previously faced difficulties due to its distance from the old district headquarters in Ongole.
