Murder arrest after death of woman in her 80s

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 80s died in an incident at an apartment.

Police were called to the flat in Keepers Road, Devizes, at around 8.10am following reports of a serious assault.

Despite the efforts of the South West Ambulance Service, police confirmed the victim died at the scene.

A 63-year-old woman was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment of injuries that were not thought to be life-changing.

Detective Constable Alan Smith, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “This is a tragic incident in which an elderly woman lost her life on Christmas Day.

“We have arrested a woman known to the victim and I can confirm we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this.

“A crime scene has been established in the flat and an urgent investigation is being carried out, including house-to-house investigations.

“Local people will see an increased police presence over the coming days. If you have any concerns or have any information please do not hesitate to speak to one of our officers.”

Police added that a cordon had been set up at the address and was likely to remain that way for the rest of Thursday and into Friday.
