Nine killed in mass shooting in South African township

Nine people were killed and 10 others were injured in a shooting attack in a town on the outskirts of South Africa’s largest city.

The attack took place in the town of Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, in the early hours of Sunday.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation reported nine deaths.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe told News24 South Africa some of the victims were at a KwaNoxolo tavern, while others were shot in the street.

“We are still busy taking statements,” Acting Gauteng Police Commissioner Fred Kekana told reporters.

“Our national crime and management team is here. The provincial crime scene management team is here, a team from the local crime center is also here, our serious crime investigation team, crime intelligence and the provincial crime detective team are also on scene.”
